PURPOSE:To perform accurate character train separation by increasing or decreasing the value of an aimed picture element according to the mean value of adjacent picture elements. CONSTITUTION:A picture signal Sb is supplied to an initial value setting circuit 2, and the signal is stored temporarily in a buffer memory as a picture signal Sc so that their picture elements correspond to each other, and then read to an arithmetic circuit 4a. The circuit 4a performs calculation according to the expression where P is the value of an aimed picture element, P is the mean value of circumferential picture elements, and (k) is a weight coefficient, thereby updating the value of the aimed picture element. The updated value is stored in a buffer memory 3a temporarily and then supplied to an arithmetic circuit 4b, which performs calculation according to said expression. When picture-element counters 5a and 5b decide on a prescribed value, picture signals in the memories 3a and 3b are sent to a binary coding circuit 6 and stored in a character string picture signal in a buffer memory 7. Then, the signal is read out to a character train extracting circuit 8 to detect the pitch and width of the character train, thereby separating respective character trains after addition of line numbers. |
