ROR3SO3A (I; R=C2-22 alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, or hydroxyalkenyl, alkaryl contg.>=1 C1-18 alkyl, aralkyl contg. C7-28 atoms, and polyether derivs. of any of the foregoing; R3 = alkylene; A = alkali metal cation) were prepd. by reacting, in the liq. phase, ROH and HOR3SO3A. A small amt. of I was present at the start of the reaction. I are useful as detergents and as surfactants for enhanced oil recovery processes. Thus, ROH R = 4-R1C6N4(OCH2CH2)5; R1=C9 alkyl, aq. KOH, and crude RO(CH2)2SO3NA (II) were mixed, and water removed under N at 120≦̸C; solid HO(CH2)2SO3Na was added at 180≦̸C/4.666 kPa and a fine grain dispersion resulted. A peak active ingredient concn. of 50% II was obtained after 75 min.
