Autoclave for treating loose material under elevated pressure has sliding shutter for filling and/or emptying. This arrangement frees entire cross-section, is self-cleaning and self-sealing and can be operated automatically. Another advantage is economy in construction. Steam peeling is esp. useful for potatoes carrots and certain types of fruit.
