PURPOSE:To prevent the blooming phenomenon of a solid-state image pickup device having a vertical signal line, by controlling the potential difference between the source and the channel of a transfer gate. CONSTITUTION:An optical cell 1 and a vertical signal line 3 are connected by a transfer gate 4, and the gate electrode of a vertical switch 2 receives pulses of a vertical scanning circuit 12 through a vertical control line 13A. The potential difference between the source and the channel of the gate on a line which is not selected by the circuit 12 is large during the time, when the vertical signal line holds an effective signal charge, but is small during the time when the vertical signal line does not hold an effective signal charge. As a result, the blooming charge of the optical cell is overflowed only when the effective charge is not held. Consequently, the potential difference between the source and the channel of the gate 4 is controlled to prevent the overflow, thus controlling the gate electrode indirectly. |
