<p>The cable consists of a multi-element co-axial cable with four conducting layers (3,5,7,9) separated by layers of insulating material (4,6,8). The conducting layers can be matted copper strands for example. The outer conducting layer (3) carries the power supply current, the next conducting layer the common (ground) connection, and the two inner layers carry electrical signals. This arrangement of conductors provides an electrostatic and electromagnetic screen for the inner, signal-carrying layers. A differentially-stripped cable constitutes a male plug. A female socket can be formed from two halves of block which has been cast in a shape complementary to that of the stripped cable. Electrical tapping points embedded in the block make contact with the exposed conducting layers (A,B,C,D). The internal convex faces of the female socket are made alternately slightly more and slightly less convex than the cylindrical profile so that the material of the cable is compressed uniformly between the two halves of the socket when it is tightened together.</p> |
