In order to obtain a boosting effect in a two-cylinder four-stroke internal combustion engine, the inlet and exhaust valves (12, 13; 11, 10) of different cylinders (I, II) are each respectively connectable to one another by way of at least one charging pipe (18, 19); in addition, control elements (1, 2, 3, 4), actuated synchronously with the inlet and exhaust valves (10, 11, 12, 13) are situated at least between the inlet and exhaust valves (10, 11, 12, 13) on the one hand and the associated inlet and exhaust pipes (6, 7, 8, 9) on the other, which elements are individually actuated so that scavenging of the charging pipe (18, 19) occurs due to the kinetic energy of the flowing exhaust gases prior to or after the respective supercharging phase. <IMAGE>
