Recently, very thin metal sheets having very low remagnetisation losses and consisting of an amorphous material have been available for such iron cores. According to the invention, in each case a multiplicity of cut-to-size metal sheets are firmly assembled to form column-like, self-supporting, dimensionally stable sheet-metal stacks (1), and a complete iron core consisting of core limbs (3) and yokes (2) is assembled from such sheet-metal stacks (1), the sheet-metal stacks (1) interlocking at the node points between the core limbs (3) and the yokes (2) in the manner of brickwork. This construction of iron cores on the one hand permits highly economical manufacture of the same and in addition, because of the relatively low remagnetisation losses, leads to a lower loading for a required cooling device. <IMAGE>
