The electromechanical ignition lock for motor vehicles which has a locking bolt which is arranged so as to interact with a part which secures the vehicle consists, according to the invention, of the following parts: a) an electronic lock (1) which has a key (11) with coding, a control device (13) for operating the ignition lock during the insertion and withdrawal of the key (11) and a device (9, 10, 12) for reading the coding of the key (11) and for producing a corresponding signal; b) a bolt (2) which is located in an inaccessible housing and which has a locking bolt (27) which is controlled by an actuation device (31), a reception device (19) for the signals transmitted by the lock and, for comparing the same with coded signals stored in a memory (20), also has an electronic control device (19) for the actuation device (31) and a circuit breaker for the power supply of the vehicle, the electronic control device (19) receiving the signals which come from the reception and comparison device (19) as well as signals which indicate the position of the locking bolt (27) and the idle state or operating state of the vehicle engine; c) connecting lines (3-8) between the lock (1) and the bolt (2) which ensure that the lock (1) is supplied with power, that coded signals are transmitted between the lock (1) and the bolt (2) and that the operation instruction for the ignition lock is passed on from the lock (1) to the bolt (2). The overall design of the ignition lock protects it in particular against damage and unauthorised actuation. <IMAGE>
