For utilising the kinetic exhaust gas energy for supercharging purposes a charging pipe (1) with four control elements (6, 7, 8, 9) is arranged between the exhaust port (2) and the fresh gas port (3) of one and the same cylinder of the internal combustion engine, which elements are cyclically actuated in such a way that they ensure four operating phases, that is the compression of fresh gas in the charging pipe (1), expulsion of fresh gas from the charging pipe (2) into the combustion chamber, the flow of exhaust gas out of the charging pipe (1) and scavenging of the charging pipe (1) with fresh gas. <IMAGE>
