A pattern recognition system for recognizing an input pattern of a plurality of rows of binary digits, converts each row of the pattern into a form having a single bit of a selected binary value in a row of bits, applies this to a respective row of selectively preset bit memory units, and indicates the number of bits of the selected value which are applied to memory units storing the selected value. A light pen 12 is used to write a character on a 10�6 photo-cell matrix 11, each 2x2 submatrix of which sets a corresponding trigger in input storage 16 via threshold logic 15 if at least two photo-cells of the sub-matrix are illuminated. Each 3-bit row of the 5-row input storage 16, treated as a binary number, is decoded to 1-out-of-8 form by AND-INVERTS at 17, the resulting 40 bits being applied to electronic templates 18-1 ... 18-n in common. During learning, the templates are enabled in turn, by "set" lines, to store the 40-bit patterns presented in SCRs, a plurality of patterns successively applied to a given template being ORed together. During recognition, each template receives the 40-bit input pattern and produces a voltage indicating the number of 1-bits the input and stored patterns have in common. Interconnected threshold devices D1 ... Dn light a lamp to indicate the largest voltage, except that this is prevented if a "blank interlock" circuit 21 detects no pattern (due to each row of input storage 16 storing 000 and there therefore being an output on the "zero" line of each group of 8 from decoder 17). Output may also be inhibited in response to particular input patterns, or in response to more than one output. The input storage 16 can also be fed from a speech decoding device. |
