The voltage regulator is used for controlling the charging of the battery by a generator having an armature and a field winding. It has a voltage-sensing switching circuit which can be connected to the generator output and is designed to produce a signal whose magnitude is proportional to the measured generator output voltage. In addition, a differential amplifier is provided to which the proportional signal is applied and by means of which the generator field winding is driven, and the generator output is controlled as a function of the proportional signal. In addition, there is a current limiting device for limiting the power amplifier output signal to the field winding to a maximum which can be predetermined.
