The invention relates to a synthetic resin for coating compositions which has been obtained by reacting an epoxide compound containing at least two epoxide groups per molecule with a monocarboxylic acid in the molar ratio 1:2. The epoxide groups have been converted into epoxide ester groups by adduction onto the monocarboxylic acid. The monocarboxylic acid contains at least one hydroxyl-substituted aromatic radical. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the preparation of the synthetic resin and to the use of the synthetic resin.
