A reversible drive mechanism (e.g. for a street cleaning machine, Fig. 1, agricultural cultivator or small tractor) comprises a driven wheel 2 and a first drive wheel 27 co-rotative about a first axis 3, a member 24 supporting a second axis about which are co-rotative a second drive wheel drivingly connected (e.g. by a belt or chain) to the wheel 27, and a friction wheel 57, the member 24 being pivotable about the axis 3 between two positions in each of which the wheel 57 engages one of two friction wheels 15, 16, 55 simultaneously rotated in opposite directions (e.g. by a flat-belt drive 12 ... 18 from a motor 9). The wheel 57 may have a steel core 58 and a resilient friction covering. The wheels 15, 16 may be the same or different, and may have the belt engaging and wheel 57 engaging diameters the same or differing. The member 24 may have projections (39, 40), Fig. 3 (not shown), on each side of the wheel 57 connected to Bowden cables (42, 44) controlled by hand levers on a steering handle 7 to pivot the member. This may be biased to a central position by a spring (32) encircling the fixed axle 3 and having two radial arms (33, 34) urging projections (35, 36) on the chassis 1 and member 24 respectively, into radial alignment. The chain (28) connecting the drive wheels 27, may be tensioned by an idler (29) on the member 24. |
