The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the continuous application of a very small quantity of liquid to a material web (30), especially for textile pile fabric, by means of a screen. The object is to achieve an exactly definable uniform application of liquid of the order of 5 to 30% of the fabric weight in the case of textiles and paper or of 5 to 30 g/m<2> in the case of sheet-like structures made of other materials, by means which are relatively easy to control and which are of simple construction. For this purpose, a net-like screen and an airstream flowing through the screen and removing the liquid from the screen and conveying it towards the material web are used. The apparatus for this process is provided with an endless screen band (27) or a screen drum as a liquid carrier, a liquid applicator device (24-26) and a device (29) blowing the liquid onto the continuously moved material web. <IMAGE>
