Circular knitting machine for the production of knitted articles having combed-in fibres, with at least one rotatable needle cylinder having knitting needles, and with at least one card which possesses a feed device for a slither, an opening device for opening the slither into individual fibres and a combing-in zone, through which the knitting needles travel and in which the fibres are inserted contactlessly, the opening device consisting of an opening roller which is equipped with a clothing and is assigned a drive independent of the knitting-machine drive and the rotational speed of which is selected so that its circumferential speed is higher than the needle speed caused by the rotation of the needle cylinder, the circumferential surface of the opening roller having opposite it a cover which possesses an entry orifice for the slither fed by the feed device and an exit orifice opening into the combing-in zone and intended for the separated fibres and which surrounds the clothing, in an opening and accelerating portion arranged between the entry orifice and the exit orifice in the direction of rotation, so closely as to prevent the fibres from being detached in this opening and accelerating portion, and there being a selection device, by means of which the minimum spacing of the needles receiving fibres in the combing-in zone can be set at least to a value which is twice as large as the needle space determined by the division of the circular knitting machine. <IMAGE>
