A settling tank for waste water or the like is subdivided into at least two part-tanks connected together, along the longitudinal edges of which a de-sludging bridge, spanning all the part-tanks, can travel. A suction tube opens eccentrically into each part-tank, which suction tube is suspended, so as to be able to pivot about a vertical axis, via a tube pivot, located above the centre of each part-tank, on the de-sludging bridge. Each suction tube can therefore be pivoted from one tank-half to the other about a vertical axis, when the de-sludging bridge reaches reversing points of its linear path. A sludge collecting vessel, which is substantially below the water surface of the settling tank, is suspended centrally from the de-sludging bridge, which sludge collecting vessel is connected via connection tubes to the tube pivots of the individual suction tubes. A transport pump, the suction nozzles of which extend into the sludge collection container, transport the waste water contained in the said container via a discharge tube to a collection point. <IMAGE>
