Apparatus for use in transferring liquid from a container to a syringe comprises a support having a recess in a rear end to receive the syringe and adapted at an opposite end to engage the container, a first cannula mounted in the support and having a forward end for entering the container and a rear end communicating with the recess in the support, and a second cannula mounted in the support and having a forward end for entering the container and a rear end for communication of its bore with the atmosphere, the second cannula being shorter than the first cannula so that the first and second cannula forward ends may be respectively below and above the liquid level in the container. In a first embodiment, Fig. 2, a part 24 of the support seals onto the end of a syringe 30 and has a frusto-conical portion locating in a socket portion of a part 23 of the support, the part 23 resting on a pierceable closure of the container 34. On withdrawal of a piston 33 in syringe 30, liquid is forced through the cannula 21 into the syringe by air entering container 34 from the atmosphere via a passage 48' between the top of part 23 and the part 24, via passages 48 between ribs on the frusto-conical portion of part 24, via passage 47 between the lower end of part 24 and the part 23 and through cannula 22. In a second embodiment withdrawal of a piston 66 in a syringe 50 fills the syringe with liquid from a container 34' via cannula 60', air entering container 34' via passages between ribs located inside a cylindrical portion 53 of a first part 51 of the support, via a passage 72 and via cannula 61'. A pierceable plug 52 seals over the end of syringe 50 and locates within portion 53, being spaced from the base thereof by shoulders 55 on the ribs to form passage 72. The plug 52 may be used to seal the end of syringe 50 after it has been filled. |
