1,213,881. Purifying esters. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 8 March, 1968 [8 March, 1967], No. 11485/68. Heading C2C. A crude mixture containing more than 90 mole per cent of ethylene glycol and ester material selected from ethylene glycol diesters of phthalic acids and their methyl-substituted derivatives and oligomers thereof is purified (i.e. colour bodies and metallic residues are removed) by contacting the mixture with a cationic exchange resin. The crude mixture is preferably that obtained from the reaction of a phthalonitrile, water and ethylene glycol in presence of one or more Pb, Fe or Sn compounds. The purified mixture may be further treated with a decolourising agent (e.g. carbon black). In Examples the mixtures are heated to 80-130‹ C. and passed through fixed beds of sulphonated polystyrene or sulphonated phenol formaldehyde resins or sulphonated organic coal. |
