PURPOSE:To improve the contracting efficiency of manuscript documents, by utilizing the correlation between adjacent picture elements to a direction of a picture and the correlation between the adjacent picture elements in the orthogonal direction altogether. CONSTITUTION:As to picture element density data train obtained from the zigzag scanning of two lines, a section consecutive in the same density level and a section consecutive in changing density level are discriminated. The section of white level consecutive in the same density level is encoded for run length by using the Weyl code. The section in which the changing density level is consecutive is encoded through the combination of the run length code of the length of the section and the code of density information of each picture element. As an example, a bit-by-bit code is used for the run length encoding for each section, the density level of each picture element itself is used for the density information and the encoding is performed by using the density level code. |
