The optical system for a wide-screen projector or enlarger comprises a front lens system 1(G1,G2), rear lens system 2(G3,G4) of focal length fB, and a master lens system 3 of focal length fM. The focal lengths satisfy the formula 4fM>=1 fB1>=2fM, e.g. fM being 25.0mm and fB 100.0mm.
