Carbon black is produced by contacting a hydrocarbon feedstock in a first reaction zone with hot free oxygen containing gas, feeding the reaction mixture into a second zone and therein contacting the mixture with hot combustion gas produced by combustion of a fuel in the presence of an amount of oxidant less than that required for complete combustion of the fuel. The free oxygen containing gas used in the first zone is or comprises air and has a free oxygen content of from 125-190% of the theoretical amount required for complete combustion of the fuel; the combustion gas used in the second zone has an oxygen content of from 50-85% of the theoretical amount for complete combustion.</p> |
