PURPOSE:To manufacture a steel with superior machinability by reducing the contents of Si, P and N which make a steel for steel wool hard and brittle among the components of the steel as well as the amount of Al2O3 as a nonmetallic inclusion. CONSTITUTION:The amount of hard Al2O3 contained as a nonmetallic inclusion in a steel contg. 0.05-0.20% C, <0.10% Si, 0.50-1.30% Mn, 0.035-0.10% P, <0.04% S and 0.005-0.015% N for manufacturing steel wool is restricted to a trace such as <=0.0010%. When the resulting steel with reduced Si, P, N and Al2O3 contents is cut with a cutting tool to manufacture steel wool, the wear of the tool due to SiO2 and Al2O3 and the embrittlement of the ferrite matrix due to the solubilization of P and N are prevented, the dissipation of the tool and the formation of shavings are reduced, and defects such as difficulty in cutting are eliminated. |
