In the region of one or more magnets 2 the floor of the channel is angled so that coins not attracted by the magnet or magnets moves down the slope as shown by coin 41. In the wall 6 opposite the magnet or magnets there is an aperture 5 through which a counterfeit coin can pass into a further channel 8 and thence to a locked box. When coins reach the end of coin channel 1 the trajectories they follow are dependent on the retardation caused by the eddy currents induced therein by the magnet or magnets. Acceptable coins 5 pass to a coin-receiving passage whilst unacceptable coins are returned to the operator.
