The vehicle clutch friction damping plate has an arm (31) abutted against springs (14) accommodated in hub flange windows. A lug (32) engages an aperture (15) in the carrier. For rotation of the carrier about the hub on one side of the neutral point, the carrier engages the lug to rotate the control plate (25) w.r.t. the hub flange. For rotation on the other side of the neutral point, the lug is released from engagement with the carrier. The control plate is then held stationary with the hub flange by frictional engagement between them. The carrier spring window can be used as the aperture for the lug.
