The stop for holding windows or doors open comprises a rod (1) one end of which rotates about an angularly adjustable friction brake. The brake is attached to the surrounding frame (21) near the window hinge so that the pivotal axis of the rod is as close as possible and parallel to the hinge axis. The other end of the rod is attached to another bracket (4) which is secured to the window itself. The friction brake contains one friction element (16) connected to the rod and another fixed friction element (24) which is releasably engaged by a knob (19).
