A water-pumping unit for use in a ground-water drainage installation comprises a vessel 1, a submersible sludge pump 4 mounted in the vessel with its outlet communicating with a delivery connection 7 containing a non-return valve 8, and an intake connection 2 and an overflow connection 3 to the vessel. A plurality of units may be connected by their connections 2 and 3 to a header pipe, the header pipe being connected to a vacuum pump and a plurality of branch pipes leading to respective wells. The vessel 1, Fig. 2 (not shown), may be mounted at the top of a well with its intake connection 2, located at the base of the vessel, communicating directly with the well.
