In a brake antilock device for the wheel brakes of a motor vehicle a normally open 2/2-way valve (2) is inserted into the common brake line (7) of a brake circuit (1) leading to the wheel brake cylinders (5, 6). The common brake line divides into at least two brake conduits (8, 9), at least one (9) of the brake conduits (8, 9) of a brake circuit (1) being directly connected, that is without an additional 2/2-way valve, open in normal braking, to a wheel brake cylinder (6), which is assigned to a vehicle wheel most involved in the total braking effect. The remaining brake conduits (8) contain additional 2/2-way valves (3), open in normal braking, assigned to wheel brake cylinders (5). Downstream of the 2/2-way valve (2) the common brake line (7) has a branch in the form of a return (10) to a reservoir (11) at zero pressure with an inserted, normally closed 2/2-way valve (4) (fig. 1). The brake conduit (9) directly connected to the wheel brake cylinder (6) is assigned in particular to the front axle of a vehicle and/or to a front axle of a vehicle double axle. The direct brake conduit (9) can also be assigned to left-side vehicle wheels, which encounter better frictional adhesion conditions on a road surface. Brake pressure reducing devices on the rear axle and/or brake boosters on the front axle reduce any brake power losses in the case of common control in one brake circuit. By means of the invention a structurally simple, cost-effective brake system is created which is capable of functioning fully in practical operation. <IMAGE>
