A load-bearing framework (11) for a textile or sheet-like covering (15) is formed from tube pieces (12, 13) which have in each case at least one inwardly projecting longitudinal rib (20) and at least one longitudinal groove (21) which is open towards the outside, is arranged inside the cross-section of the longitudinal rib (20) and is constricted at its mouth by lip-like mouth edges (22). In order to connect in each case two of the tube pieces (12, 13) to each other, use is made of connecting members (25) which are pushed in a fitting manner into each of the two tube pieces (12, 13) and has in each case at least one longitudinal groove (27) for receiving the longitudinal rib (20) of the relevant tube piece. On opposite bordering edges, the covering (15) is provided in each case with a folded retaining strip (30) which encloses a cord (32). This results in the formation of a bead (33) which is pushed into the longitudinal groove (21) of at least one of the tube pieces (12, 13) and engages behind the lip-like mouth edges (22) of the longitudinal groove (21). The bead is thus prevented from sliding out through the mouth of the longitudinal groove (21). The apparatus may be used, for example, to protect vehicles or a set of seating furniture against solar radiation or weathering influences. <IMAGE>
