PURPOSE:To form inexpensively an optical isolator which utilizes Farady rotation effect and has good isolation characteristics, by growing epitaxially a garnet film within a specific angle range on a nonmagnetic substrate. CONSTITUTION:A nonmagnetic crystal bar which is grown with[110]plane as the pulling-up direction is cut out at an angle theta of >=1 deg. and <=15 deg. to[110]plane to form a substrate. Garnet is epitaxially grown on this obtained substrate, and a vertical magnetic field is applied to this garnet film (an incident light is made incident vertically to the garnet film surface), thus forming an optical isolator. A nonmagnetic crystal bar where the pulling-up direction is not[110]plane but [211]plane may be used as said nonmagnetic crystal bar. |
