For ram pressure charging without energy transfer by way of rotating parts the inlet and exhaust valves (E1, E2; A1, A2) on a pair of cylinders of an internal combustion engine can be connected crosswise by way of connecting lines (4, 5) in a control slide valve (3) which rotates at the speed of the engine camshaft. The course of the connecting lines (4, 5) in relation to fixed lines and ports (6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15) is selected so that only at the start of the opening of the respective exhaust valve (A1, A2), that is during the pre-exhaust shock, is a connection created to the inlet valve (E1, E2) of the other cylinder and boosting thereby brought about. In the rotary slide valve (3) direct fresh gas inlet ports (10, 11) and direct exhaust gas ports (8, 9) are also provided which, when connecting lines (4, 5) are separated from the exhaust valves (A1, A2) but connected to intake lines (14, 15) for fresh gas, temporarily ensure scavenging of the respective connecting line (4, 5) in a manner similar to a jet pump.
