In a regenerative heat exchanging system, in which the heat content of a hot raw gas is at least partially firstly transferred to a solid intermediate heat carrier and then from the latter to a purified gas, provision is made of at least three zones. In this case, during the heating up of an already cooled zone by hot raw gas flowing through, a zone already heated up is purged, and an already purged zone is cooled by purified gas flowing through. The arrangement of three zones means that the raw gas arriving can be freed from the solid particles it contains in the course of the heat exchange to be carried out.
