In train-formation tracks equipped with clearing and waggon-hauling devices there is provision for cleared and shunting units which are moving forward to be reordered chronologically in such a way that the traction force of the drive is, in a borderline case, just sufficient for a clearing and shunting unit in order to transport onwards the compartments which have entered the entry section of the respective track-formation track since the last clearing operation. This is achieved by logically connecting the humping sequences, indicated in the humping memory of the shunting system, for the individual track-formation tracks with the lengths and weights and the running properties of the compartments which are being humped. By utilising the maximum traction force of the clearing and shunting units, longer transport times are available for the individual clearing operations than in the past; at the same time, it continues to be ensured that the entry sections are actually cleared even in the case of an unfavourable humping sequence. <IMAGE>
