The end stop, compises a echanical buffer (1) with an axial bore (3) into which a proximity detector (5) providing an output signal when the required position is attained is fitted. The front end of the proximity detector (5) is slightly set back from the front end of the buffer (1), its rear end having a connector (6) for fitting to a signal lead (7). Pref. the buffer (1) can be rotated at either end to allow its position to be adjusted. The end stage can be used for a machine tool carriage etc. A cylindrically shaped proximity detector is provided and has front and rear sections having a dia. which is compliant with that of the passage in the buffer.
