PURPOSE:To obtain an electrochromic (EC) display element where a high-speed display is possible with a small driving current, by arranging regions consisting of EC materials and regions consisting of electron blocking materials alternately in many stages between a display electrode and a counter electrode. CONSTITUTION:The first regions consisting of EC layers (A) (such as WO3 layers) 3 and electron supply layers (such as In2O3 layers) 4 and the second layers consisting of electron block layers (B) (such as insulating material layers) 5 are arranged alternately in many stages between a display side transparent electrode 2 and a counter electrode 6 to form an EC display element (1 in a figure indicates a glass substrate). When a voltage is applied to electrodes 2 and 6 of this element, polarization occurs in a set of the EC layer 3 and the electron supply layer 4 (but ion conduction does not occur); and if the polarity of the applied voltage is so selected that electrons are migrated to the side of the EC layer 3, electrons are trapped in the site of W<+6> of WO3 to generate a color center, and the display element is colored. |
