The invention relates to a device for increasing the chatter stability in lathes, grinding machines and other machine tools with a rotating workpiece, in which the workpiece is supported by means of a live centre. In order to suppress chatter movements as far as possible, the device is designed in such a way that it has at least two different bending moments of inertia, running in directions offset by 90 DEG perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the workpiece, in the dead part of the centre and/or the main spindle bearing of the lathe.
