Substituted alkyl beta -carboline-3-carboxylates of the general formula I <IMAGE> where R<3> is lower alkoxy with up to 3 C atoms, R<4> is hydrogen, lower alkyl, the group CH2OR<1> where R<1> is lower alkyl with up to 3 C atoms, R<A> is the group NR<5>R<6> <IMAGE> CHR<7>-OR<9>, OR<10> and C IDENTICAL CR<11>, where R<5-11> have various meanings, and process for their preparation are described. The compounds according to the invention are valuable pharmaceuticals having effects on the central nervous system.
