An inner filter for aquariums is proposed, containing an elongated filter cartridge and, mounted thereon in a detachable manner, a head which contains an electric motor with a pump. The filter cartridge consists of individual plug-together module elements of which, depending on the desired length, two or more can be plugged together or can be pulled off, apart from one remaining module element. The head is designed, in terms of its length, its transverse dimension and its external shape, exactly like each module element, the head and the module elements plugged together with it forming an approximately rod-shaped compact element which is continuous in the longitudinal direction. The head and the plug-together module elements may have a cylindrical shape or preferably a polygonal external shape, especially octagonal shape. At the same time, the head and the module elements, and/or the module elements amongst themselves, can be plugged together in such a way that they are offset relative to one another in the circumferential direction about the longitudinal axis, as the user chooses. The lowermost module element is sealed in the bottom zone by a slip-on sealing cover.
