In a nuclear power plant, the reactor coolant gas is expanded in a gas turbine driving an alternator. The expanded gas is cooled in a regeneration heat exchanger, compressed and heated in an economizer before returning to the reactor. In a modification, gas compression may be effected near the saturation point, to liquefy the gas. The plant characteristics are selected so as to maintain the fuel element cladding temperature near the safe limit and the reactor gas pressure constant to avoid strain variations in the fuel cladding and pressure vessel, during variations in plant power.</p> |
