Process for the preparation of cycloheptanone

Cycloheptanone is obtained by rearrangement of cycloheptene oxide in dimethyl sulphoxide or dimethylformamide in the presence of sodium iodide; the sodium iodide can be recovered again in a simple manner from the rearrangement of the mixture after removal of the bulk of cycloheptanone and immediately fed back into the rearrangement step as a catalyst.
