On a machine for the forming of pin-shaped workpieces, in particular a thread rolling machine (1), an apparatus for segregating defective workpieces is provided at the workpiece exit end of the forming tools, in particular thread-rolling dies (2, 4), of the machine (1). The apparatus has a deflection plate (9) which can be moved into the path of the processed workpieces in response to a control pulse from a fault detection device and deflects the defective workpieces, in particular screws (bolts) (7), sideways. The fault detection device includes an electronic processor which compares the pressure values for one work sequence, obtained by pressure sensors (15) on one of the tools (2, 4), with a reference variable which corresponds to the normal work sequence in the presence of non-defective formed workpieces and, in the event of a deviation from this reference variable within predetermined tolerances, supplies a control pulse for the actuation of a double-acting cylinder (11) which moves the deflection plate (9) in front of the exit end of the forming tools (2, 4) so that the defective workpiece (screw (bolt) 7) is diverted into a special container (8). <IMAGE>
