In the process for conferring hydrophobic, antistatic and improved hand properties on leather and pelt furs, the leather and pelt furs are treated with an alkaline solution of a compound of formula <IMAGE> where R is C14-C35-alkyl, preferably C14-C20-alkyl, R1 is hydrogen or a group of formula <IMAGE> and K<(+)> is a cation, preferably Na<(+)>, and then basified (deacidified, acidified off).
