Compounds of the general formula <CHEM> wherein X<1> is a group R<1>O and X<2> is a group R<2>O, or one of X<1> and X<2> is a group R<4> and the other is hydroxy, wherein, R<1>, R<2>, R<3> and R<4> are the same or different and each represent hydrogen or a C1-4 alkyl group; Ph is a phenyl group, optionally substituted by one or more groups independently selected from halo nitro; and Y is a group of formula <CHEM> or a group of formula <CHEM> or a group of formula -NH-CH2-CO-; and basic salts thereof. These compounds have an advantageous enkephalinase inhibitory activity which renders the compounds useful in medical therapy, eg. to prolong and/or potentiate in a mammal, the effects of endogenous or exogenous enkephalins. The latter includes synthetic enkephalin analogues. |
