PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent contrast by forming a black mask layer except at the display pattern of one substrate, and adding blackish dichroic coloring matter in liquid crystal and setting the product of the refractive index anisotropy and thickness of the liquid crystal to 1.24-1.40. CONSTITUTION:The blackish mask layer 9 is formed on a transmission negative display TN type liquid-crystal display element which uses a color filter except at the display pattern of at least one substrate 4 and the blackish dichroic coloring matter 7 is added in the liquid crystal 8, so that the product DELTAnd of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn and thickness d mum of the liquid crystal 8 is 1.24-1.40. For the purpose, the quantity of transmitted light is minimized to make off segments of a background and a display part darkest and make the darkness of the black mask of the background and the darkness of the off segments nearly equal. Consequently, the high-contrast liquid crystal display element whose off segments only float on the dark background is obtained. |
