5-(2,6-Dichloro-4-trifluoromethyl phenoxy)-2-nitrobenzoic acid derivs. (I) are new. In (I), R1 and R2 are H or CH3; Y is O, NH or NCH3; Z is a residue OR3 in which R3 is H, Na, K, NH4, one equivalent of an Mg or Ca ion, CH3, C2H5 substd. by F, Cl, CN, 1-4C alkoxy and/or 1-4C alkylthio, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-, iso-, sec- or tert-butyl, 3-5C alkenyl, 3-5C alkynyl, benzyl, phenylethyl, or (when Y is O or NCH3) unsubstd. C2H5 or Z is -N(R4)(R5) in which R4 is H, 1-5C alkyl opt.substd. by F, Cl, CN and/or 1-4C alkoxy, 3-5C alkenyl, 3-5C alkynyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl or benzyl and R5 is H, 1-5C alkyl, opt. substd. by F, Cl, CN and/or 1-4C alkoxy, 1-5C alkoxy, 3-5C alkenyl, 3-5C alkynyl, 3-6C cycloalkyl, benzyl phenylethyl or phenyl opt. mono- to trisubstd. by CH3, F, Cl, Br, CN, NO2, CF3 and/or OCH3; or Z is pyrrolidyl opt. substd. by CH3 and/or C2H5, morpholinyl opt. substd. by CH3, piperidyl, 3-methyl-, 4-methyl-, 2-ethyl-, 4-ethyl-, 2,3-dimethyl-, 2,4-dimethyl-, 2,5-dimethyl-, or 3,5-dimethyl-piperidyl, or when Y is NH or NCH3, also 2-methylpiperidyl). The new cpds. are plant growth regulators and can be used as defoliants, desiccants, haulm-killing agents, germination inhibitors, and especially herbicides. Depending on the rate of application, the cpds. can be used as total or selective herbicides. Rate of application is generally 0.05-10 (esp. 0.1-5) kg/ha. |
