1,227,221. Heat exchangers. SOC. TRANE. 4 June, 1968 [5 Feb., 1968], No. 26477/68. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger comprises a plurality of first fluid, e.g. a gas, passages 1 defined between parallel spaced plates 2 and 3 in alternation with groups of parallel blocks 4 each provided with a longitudinally extending passage 5 housing a pipe 6 for the passage of a second fluid, e.g. water. Adjacent blocks of the same group are spaced from one another to define spaces 16 for detection and collection of escaped fluid due to leakage. Further such spaces for leakage fluid may be provided by grooves formed in the blocks adjacent the plates 2, 3 and the tubes 6 (see Figs. 3 and 4, not shown). Corrugated sheets 12 disposed in the first fluid passages 1, spacer bars 10 and the blocks 4 are brazed to the plates 2 and 3. Bend portions 14 interconnect adjacent pipes 6. In a modification the plates 2, 3 are omitted (Fig. 3, not shown). Alternatively the pipes 6 may be omitted, the second fluid flowing directly through the longitudinl passages in the blocks. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the plates 2, 3 and the blocks 4 are curved to define an annular heat exchanger arrangement. |
