PURPOSE:In producing phenol acetone by oxidizing cumene with oxygen, to recover useful substances in high yield, by separating the aimed compounds from the reaction mixture by distillation and thermally decomposing the prepared distillation residue in the presence of a specific catalyst at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:In oxidizing cumene with oxygen to synthesize cumene hydroperoxide and decomposing the cumene hydroperoxide with an acid to produce phenol and acetone useful as intermediates for synthetic resins, phenol and acetone are separated from the reaction mixture by distillation to give phenol distillation residue, which is thermally decomposed in the presence of an alumina catalyst or a silica-alumina catalyst, preferably Al2O3:SiO2(weight ratio)=99:1-60:30 which are treated with an acid such as acetic acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, boric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid at 200-310 deg.C, preferably 250-300 deg.C to recover useful substances such as cumene, phenol, etc., especially alpha-methylstyrene, phenol, cumene and acetophenone in high yield. |
