1275434 Coating BALM PAINTS Ltd 30 July 1969 [7 Aug 1968] 38262/69 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Substrates such as steel panels may be coated by spraying with non-aqueous dispersions comprising (1) a disperse phase insoluble in the continuous phase and comprising 10 to 45 per cent of the total volume of the dispersion of polymer and 10 to 150 per cent by volume, based on the polymer, of a swelling agent for the polymer which is a non-aqueous liquid which at least in part solvates the polymer and has a solubility of less than 10 per cent in the continuous phase of the dispersion, (2) 2 to 10 weight per cent, based on the polymer, of a polymeric stabiliser and (3) a continuous phase comprising at least 75 per cent and less than 90 per cent by weight of a saturated hydrocarbon liquid together with more than 10 but not more than 25 weight per cent of a soluble non-fugitive plasticiser for the disperse polymer, provided that the volume of said plasticiser in the dispersion does not exceed 50 per cent by volume of the disperse polymer, and that a mixture of the plasticiser comprising the continuous phase together with the swelling agent, in the relative proportions in which they occur in the dispersion, is a solvent for the disperse polymer at ambient temperature. In examples steel panels are spray coated with paints comprising dispersions prepared by polymerising (1 to 7) methyl methacrylate and (8 to 10) a mixture of methyl methacrylate, styrene and maleic anhydride in aromatic free hydrocarbon liquids in the presence of polymeric stabilisers formed by esterifying a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, glycidyl methacrylate and a condensate of glycidyl methacrylate and a self polyester of 12-hydroxystearic acid with methacrylic acid; and containing n-butyl benzyl phthalate/ethylene glycol diacetate as swelling agent and nbutyl, isobutyl, isooctyl or isodecyl cyclohexyl phthalates as plasticiser; in admixture with pigment dispersions comprising phthalocyanine blue, carbon black, titanium dioxide, isobutyl cyclohexyl phthalate, n-butyl benzyl phthalate, silicone oil, organic derivative of magnesium montmorillonite, hydrocarbon solvents and a polymeric stabiliser prepared by esterifying a glycidyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate/reaction product of glycidyl methacrylate and 12-hydroxystearic acid polyester with p-nitrobenzoic acid. |
