PURPOSE:To improve yield without giving any adverse influence upon the quality of an ingot in a titled method wherein coolants which settle by gravity into a mold and are used as partition walls by rolling down the succeeding end part of the ingot of the previous steel kind in the state of having an unsolidified layer internally. CONSTITUTION:In a method for charging coolants 4 at the end of casting of a previous steel kind 6 and continuing the casting of a succeeding dissimilar steel kind 7, the arbitrary length part in the succeeding end part of the ingot 6 is rolled down with pinch rolls 9 in the state of having an unsolidified layer internally. Then the volume of shrinkage cavities 5 is decreased by as much as the volume in the unsolidified steel part is decreased, and a required discarding part is shortened considerably. This rolling down treatment has not only the effect of decreasing the length of the cavities 5 but the effect of improving yield unless the treatment is carried out in the state of having the layer 3 in the ingot. The position and range where the rolling down treatment is applied are easily controlled by measuring the casting length from the point of the time when the coolants are charged, with an exisiting measuring machine for the length of the ingot. |
