<p>A corrosion and abrasion resistant coating, which is weldable and bonds chrome satisfactorily is applied by immersing the metal substrate in a solution contng. chromium ions (pref. 6-valent) and sulphate, chloride and/or fluoborate as activating ions. The object to be coated is used as a cathode to conduct D.C. electrolysis with a current density of at least 0.7 A/dm2., whilst maintaining the pH of the solution below ca. 2.0 so that a protective duplex-chromium coating, consisting of chrome metal and one or more chrome oxides, is precipitated onto the metal substrate.</p> |
