<p>Graft polymers are produced in aqs. suspension by suspending soln. of polymer, unsaturated comonomer and polymerisation initiator in organic solvent, having higher vapour pressure than aqs. phase, in aqs. phase, opt. contg. suspension stabiliser, keeping temp. of aqs. phase above b.p. of organic solvent, removing organic solvent vapour, completing graft polymerisation, opt. by further heating with vigorous stirring, and separating fine grain suspension graft polymer formed. Besides ensuring effective removal of heat of polymerisation, process avoids difficulties associated with use of organic solvent (chain stopping action, difficulty in removing solvent) and of aqs. phase alone (inhomogeneous product formation).</p> |
